The Deep South

A land of raw beauty

A land of striking contrasts and raw beauty. The canyons and sandstone formations of Isalo National Park create dramatic landscapes, while Tuléar opens onto vast coastal horizons. Fort Dauphin reveals a more remote and wind-swept scenery, where mountains, ocean and endemic flora meet. This region offers a more adventurous and deeply immersive experience.

Isalo’s sculpted canyons, the wild beauty of the Bay of Salary and the energy of Fort Dauphin reveal a region defined by contrast, resilience and open horizons

The Deep South

Where raw landscapes meet the edge of the ocean

Southern Madagascar reveals one of the island’s most striking and contrasting regions. Exploring Southern Madagascar requires both careful planning and local expertise, transforming this remote territory into a journey of rare intensity and depth.

Travel through the South often follows the legendary RN7, a route that gradually unveils the island’s diversity, from the highlands to the arid expanses of the deep south. From Fianarantsoa to Tuléar, the road crosses the sandstone formations of the Isalo massif, passes through the Mahafaly plateau with its sculptural and semi-desert landscapes, and eventually opens onto the Indian Ocean.

Beyond Tuléar, the coastline reveals a succession of distinct atmospheres, from the fishing villages of Ifaty and the pristine shores of Anakao to more remote and untouched areas such as Salary Bay and Cap Sainte-Marie. Further southeast, Fort-Dauphin offers yet another perspective, where mountains, ocean and endemic vegetation meet.

The region is also deeply marked by the presence of ancestral communities, including the Bara, Mahafaly and Antandroy peoples, whose traditions and ways of life remain closely tied to the land.
