The West Coast

The Sakalava's countryside

The south west coast of Madagascar unfolds as a journey through  arid plains, rivers and monumental natural formations.

The route begins along the RN35 from Antsirabe to Morondava, crossing isolated places such as the calm village of Miandrivazo, or the gold mining village of Dabolava, offer a glimpse into a raw and deeply local way of life.

Further west, the Menabe region reveals its signature scenery, shaped by dust, light and towering baobabs. Morondava is home to the iconic Avenue of the Baobabs, one of Madagascar’s most emblematic landscapes.

The descent of the Tsiribihina River offers a slow and immersive journey through cliffs, wildlife and remote villages, leading toward Belo-sur-Tsiribihina and the dramatic limestone formations of the Tsingy de Bemaraha. Along the coast, Belo-sur-Mer reveals a more intimate and preserved atmosphere, accessible by sea.

This region is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Sakalava people, whose culture, history and relationship to the land continue to shape the identity of western Madagascar.
